The Hawaii Nature Center

Supporting environmental education while having fun with others is what volunteering at the Hawai’i Nature Center is all about. Volunteer benefits include T-shirts, personalized orientation and training, and special invitations to the annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic and the O`ahu Museum Volunteer Leaders’ Volunteer Appreciation Month activities in April.

 

Our Volunteer Program Manager will find a niche that is just right for you. Discover new skills and creative talents, and find out how you can make a difference.

TEACHING DOCENTS
Work with school children outdoors and assist our educators with various environmental education programs. Previous work with children preferred but not required. Background check required.

 

Time commitment: At least two mornings monthly.

 

GARDENING & LANDSCAPING

Maintain planted areas around the HAWAI‘I NATURE CENTER. Includes planting, propagation, weeding, watering, and composting. Can also help with the maintenance of lo‘i kalo (taro patch).

 

Time commitment: At least twice a month at your convenience.

 

TRAIL MAINTENANCE

Care for existing hiking trails. Requires the ability to do physical work such as raking, removing plant debris and cutting back vegetation. Must also be able to walk for at least one mile.

 

Time commitment: Flexible days during business hours; 10am-4pm.

 

INTERACTIVE NATURE MUSEUM DOCENT

Lead groups of visitors on guided tours through the HAWAI‘I NATURE CENTER’S hands-on interpretive museum. Volunteers will answer questions and help visitors discover Maui’s unique environment. Will also assist with the maintenance of displays and care of stream life exhibits.

 

Time commitment: One day per week, flexible days and hours.

 

FACILITIES MAINTENANCE

Help maintain and beautify our facilities. Includes simple construction and repair projects, painting, and cleaning.

 

Time commitment: Varies. As you are available.
