INM & Rainforest Walk

Two very special experiences await Maui visitors and residents alike at the Hawaii Nature Center's Facility in Iao Valley on Maui.

Our Interactive Nature Museum (INM) and Rainforest Walk have been designed to interpret and experience Hawaii's natural history in a museum setting and a natural environment. This entertaining and educational combination of activities is perfect for individuals and families who want to know why Maui and the whole island chain are unique and precious.

Explore a Precious Environment!

The Rainforest Walk is a guided excursion into the majestic and memorable Iao Valley. You will follow ancient footpaths across Iao Stream with a guide who will share the lore and legend of this historic location. A moderate loop trail, it features native and introduced Hawaiian plants and the remains of ancient habitation. More than a hike, it is an information-filled adventure that will enhance your appreciation and understanding of Hawaii. The culturally rich and lush property on which our hike is conducted is available through a generous, low-cost lease arrangment with C. Brewer and Wailuku Agribusiness. These lease rights have made possible a unique educational experience for visitors and residents alike.

Learning Games and Experiences

After your hike, plan to spend some time in the Interactive Nature Museum, which features exhibits to interpret and enhance your new understanding of Hawaii's cultural and natural history. Designed to appeal to all ages, the exhibits offer hands-on activities to reinforce concepts. A towering glass solarium presents ever-changing views of the Valley; rushing water flows into touch pools and aquariums filled with native stream life. Try your luck in the dispersal arcade and make friends with a carnivorous caterpillar.
