Kolea Watch is a cooperative project of:
Kolea Watch began as an effort to bring field science to K-12 students around Hawai'i. It is now open to the public as well -- a team of students, scientists, and the public can answer questions new to science! These questions include:
- Do Kolea leave on the same day on all Hawaiian islands?
- When do they leave other places in their wintering range?
- Do birds that spend the day nearby roost together? Stage together?
- Do birds from different islands interbreed?
- How do young birds find their way to wintering grounds?
- and we keep thinking of more!

Kolea Watch activities include taking data on the spring Kolea migration, school visits, teacher workshops, and Staging Search. You can count Kolea to time their spring migration, join in tracking the birds by radio telemetry, and study Kolea and other native shorebirds with your school class.
With your help, we can learn more about the life of the fascinating Kolea bird!
