Kolea is the Hawaiian name for the Pacific Golden Plover.
Kolea are very common in Hawaii except in the summer -- when they nest in Alaska. On O'ahu, they leave on April 25th plus or minus only a couple of days! This is one of the most precise internal calendars ever discovered in animals.
When do Kolea leave other places?
Nobody knows exactly. A few scientist can't answer this kind of question by themselves. People in Hawaii and across the wintering range of Kolea are teaming up to answer this question. Kolea Watch helps organize this research and provide information and materials for use in schools.
You can join this research!
Simply count Kolea in the same place and time each day when the birds are getting ready to leave. The data is simple to collect, but the results can tell us a great deal about this bird! The study is open to everyone.
