| Jamie
earned a bachelors degree in individualized studies (life sciences, visual
arts, and dance) from the University of Minnesota (1999). She holds a masters
degree in cultural anthropology with a specialization in ecological anthropology
from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (2006). Jamie has been a proud and
dedicated member of the Nature Center family for the past seven years. With
the Nature Center's place-based, hands-on teaching style, Jamie takes great
pride in educating local children about the natural environment while promoting
positive values based on interconnectedness, reciprocity, and respect for
nature and each other. She believes we are helping to create a new generation
of critical thinkers who are personally connected to the land. Jamie has
experience developing arts and science curricula for students of all ages.
She also teaches anthropology courses at UH Outreach College and Hawai'i
Tokai International College.
In addition to her love for teaching and nature, Jamie also has over ten years experience in the fields of mental health and social work. She has worked extensively with people with a variety of special needs including children with autism, at-risk teenagers, and developmentally challenged adults. Her other passions include traveling, performance arts and dance, and capoeira. She is a member of hula halau Ka La Onohi Mai O Haehae and Capoeira Besouro Hawai'i (brazilian martial arts/dance). She also performs with many local dance theater companies including, IONA Contemporary Dance Theater, Samadhi Hawai'i, and Convergence Dance Theater.
